Brian Howard enters his first year as Sports Information Director at Ouachita Baptist University.
Prior to coming to Arkadelphia, Howard spent a year and a half covering Gulf South Conference action at the University of West Alabama. While in Livingston, Ala., and covering West Alabama, his duties included being a contact for various sports, primarily volleyball, women's basketball and softball. Other duties included producing media guides, writing press releases, maintaining the athletic web site and being the public address announcer for home baseball and softball games.
Howard has been around sports his entire life, spending 15 years as a soccer player. After graduating in 1995 from Firestone High School in Akron, Ohio, Howard attended NCAA Division II Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio.
During his time at Ashland, Howard was named Outstanding Sophomore of the Year in Radio. He remained very active in the radio and television department, where he served as a sports anchor for the campus television station, campus disc jockey, sports play-by-play and color commentator and sports producer. He worked in sports information during his senior year and was a sports writer for the collegiate newspaper. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sports Communications in the Spring of 2000. While also in college, Howard was a member of the Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity.
Prior to graduation, Howard had interships at WEWS News Channel 5 in Cleveland, Ohio; 97.5 WONE Radio in Akron and the Akron Beacon Journal Newspaper.
In the spring of 2000, Howard took his first job at the El Dorado News-Times in El Dorado, Ark. He covered a variety of sports. After a year and a half, he left Arkansas for West Virginia, taking a job at the Mineral Daily News-Tribune in Keyser, W.Va. As sports editor, Howard covered three prep schools, Potomac State Junior College and West Virginia University.
The Greenwood Index-Journal in Greenwood, S.C. was the next stopping point for Howard. He covered prep sports, as well as Division II Lander University of the Peach Belt Conference. During his two and a half years at the paper, Howard covered the Peach Belt Conference Basketball Tournament twice, the University of South Carolina and Clemson University football spring games once. He also produced several feature stories and had interviews with former South Carolina head football coach Lou Holtz, Clemson football coach Tommy Bowden and current NFL player Gaines Adams.
After leaving the Greenwood Index-Journal, Howard spent seven months working for the Jonesboro News Daily in Jonesboro, Ga. During his time at the paper, Howard covered the MBNA Bass Pro Shops 500. His resume of interviews continued to grow while in Georgia, producing feature stories on Rusty Wallace, Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Phil Mickelson and Annika Sorenstam. He also covered Clayton State University of the Peach Belt Conference.
Howard, 31, is the son of Joe and Sally Howard. He currently resides in Arkadelphia.
