A quick glance around the GSC reveals what Ouachita fans already know: Todd Knight is one of the longest standing head football coaches in the GSC. He is one of only four current head coaches in the conference that has led a team to the GSC championship and national playoffs. He has proven to be one of the league’s strong leaders as head football coach and leads the Ouachita program with the integrity and passion that the Tigers need to be successful.
When Knight arrived in Arkadelphia, the Ouachita program was in the infant stages of making the transition into NCAA Division II from NAIA. In 2000, Ouachita made another change in conference affiliation with a move from the Lone Star to the Gulf South Conference. Once again Knight led the program into new territory.
The Ouachita football program has made steady improvement. 2002-2003 marked solid teams that would help build the future of the Ouachita program. Big games have also been a part of his tenure at OBU, including a first-ever win over national power North Alabama, the first win over Central Arkansas in 11 years and a three-overtime victory against a ranked Southeastern Oklahoma squad. Wins against archrivals have been plentiful, with a 3-3 record against Harding in the last six years and four wins against Henderson State in six tries.
Knight not only leads on the field, but his teams have made improvements off the field as well. Knight’s seniors have had an 89 percent graduation rate. The team has been involved in community service for many years ranging from improvement of city facilities to fund raising for the less fortunate in our community. Many players over the years have worked with the local elementary schools. Knight says his biggest accomplishment has been watching the team members go on to be successful fathers and leaders in the endeavors that they take on.
Knight has had many players receive honors on the field and in the classroom. He has recruited and coached three NFL players, 48 All-GSC & All-LSC players, six All-Americans, two Honorable Mention All-Americans, 14 Academic All-Conference players and many GSC honor roll student-athletes.
Knight’s development as a Head Coach has come under solid leadership during his playing and assistant coaching days. He was under legendary coaches Buddy Benson as a player, Red Parker & Don Skelton at Delta Sate and David Lee at UTEP. Knight considers himself very fortunate to have worked under such great head coaches.
Coach Knight and his wife Julie have 3 children; Casey, 16, Spencer, 14, and Jake, 11.
